Cable and internet company Spectrum Networks launched Spectrum News in Hawaii on Wednesday, a new local news platform that will be available for the company's Island customers.

The news platform, which will be made accessible via the Spectrum News app, includes a mix of local and community news, politics, sports and weather specifically about Hawaii. A team of six digital journalists and producers will create original content for the platform.

Spectrum customers can download the news app on iOS and Android smartphones and tablets to read, listen to, or watch local news.

“Hawaii is home to diverse communities with deeply-rooted culture and strong local connections,” said Gregg Fujimoto, Spectrum’s senior vice president, Field Operations Hawaii, in a statement. “Hawaii residents carry the Aloha spirit proudly, and now, with the launch of the Spectrum News App, Spectrum customers in Hawaii can further strengthen their connection to the people, events, and local news within their community and state.”

Spectrum journalists will cover areas on and around Oahu, including state and local politics from Honolulu, Maui County, Hawaii Island, and Kauai. Nuy Cho, a journalist with more than 20 years of journalism experience, will be Spectrum News' executive producer, and Lianne Thompson, the former assistant editor at Midweek, will be digital producer.

In addition to Spectrum’s own reporting, the app also features curated news content from Pacific Business News, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, West Hawaii Today, Hawaii Tribune-Herald, and The Garden Island.

“The Spectrum News App has served as an invaluable source for highly-localized, trusted and accessible journalism in our Spectrum News markets since its launch July 2020,” said Katie Lombardi, vice president of digital, Spectrum Networks in a statement. “Each month, hundreds of thousands of customers rely on the app for comprehensive local news, and to foster a deeper dialogue and connection with their communities. Our goal is to build that same relationship with residents in Hawaii, and be an essential part of their daily lives.”
