American Savings Bank's third of four semi-automated digital centers to open this year had its grand opening at Laie Foodland on Monday.

As part of its initiative to respond to modern banking trends, ASB moved to phase out some traditionally staffed branches with reduced staff, and self-service in 2021. The first to open was the in-store Honolulu Walmart location on June 28, followed by the Waipio Foodland on July 12.

The Laie Foodland location at 55-510 Kamehameha Hwy. similarly features full-service ATM machines, a "digital bar" for online services, and a space for virtual conferencing. There is some on-site staff that can provide support for customers for standard services like depositing checks, opening accounts, applying for mortgages and receiving a financial checkup.

ASB is planning to open its Kapaa digital center on Aug. 9 to complete its replacement of a handful of specifically targeted traditional branches for the year. According to an ASB spokesperson, the bank will "continue to evaluate other potential digital center locations."

“We are continuously looking for ways to make banking easy and our new digital centers provide customers with more options to do their banking how and when they choose,” said Ann Teranishi, ASB president and CEO, said in a statement. “So far, the response to our digital centers has been great and we’re glad that we can offer the convenience and flexibility of our digital banking technology while still providing that same warm, friendly, in-person service our customers receive at any of our locations."

The Laie location's hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Fridays; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.
