Bank of Hawaii announced this week the opening of its eighth Hawaii Island branch, an in-store location at Safeway in Niumalu Marketplace in Kailua-Kona.
The new branch opened with a traditional Hawaiian blessing was held Monday morning, and is Hawaii Island's first to be styled as a Bank of Hawaii "Branch of Tomorrow," with new technology and social distancing in mind. The 433-square-foot space on Henry Street has a platform desk that can accept transactions, plus three teller stations.
There is a Bank of Hawaii ATM at the branch and another in the Safeway, which opened in December.
The existing Kona branch on Makala Boulevard, which has been around since 1922, will remain, a BOH spokesperson told Pacific Business News.
General banking hours at the Niumalu Marketplace Safeway are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. There is an additional hour before general banking each day designated "kupuna time" for at-risk individuals.
BOH's Hilo branch is the next targeted for a "Branch of Tomorrow" overhaul on Hawaii Island with a timetable of the end of 2021 or early 2022, the BOH spokesperson told PBN.
