Two new organizations promoting responsible use of AI in health care have included AdventHealth as a founding member.

One of those groups — Coalition for Health AI — unites health care providers, tech firms and academics to decide on best practices for AI development and implementation in health care.

AdventHealth is one of 20 health care providers involved, according to an April 17 news release. Amazon.com Inc. (Nasdaq: AMZN), Google (Nasdaq: GOOG), CVS Health Corp. (NYSE: CVS) and Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) are the founding industry partners.

The other consortium — Trustworthy, Responsible AI Network — is focused on accessibility, making sure all health care organizations can access the safest, most effective AI tools and products. Microsoft is a founding industry partner in that group, as well.

AdventHealth is one of 13 medical groups with a founding membership role in both groups. The others are Boston Children's Hospital, Duke Health, Johns Hopkins Medicine, Mass General Brigham, MedStar Health, Mount Sinai Health System, Northwestern Medicine, Providence, Sharp HealthCare, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine & Public Health and Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Chief Clinical Officer Dr. Victor Herrera of AdventHealth said the nonprofit is well-suited for the opportunities, given its position that AI plays a role in providing “whole-person care.”

“Artificial intelligence is now providing tools that allow us to be more efficient and effective when taking care of patients, and we can do it in a way that is safer,” said Herrera during a December 2023 podcast with Orlando Business Journal

For patients concerned that AI could replace human judgment, AdventHealth has provided deeper information through articles published on its website.

One article describes how, thanks to AI, its imaging department has been able to detect early signs of potential strokes. “The system has X-rays with AI that screen for osteoporosis. AI also monitors patients and sends alerts about signs of sepsis — the leading cause of hospital deaths in the U.S.,” wrote Director of External Communications Jeff Grainger in the article.

AdventHealth formalized its approach to AI when in July 2023 it announced the formation of its AI advisory board, which has representation from big tech, local organizations and universities. The board reviews and approves AI tools and products with an eye toward patient safety and privacy.
