Digitec Interactive LLC

Digital Interactive LLC was chosen as one of Orlando Business Journal's 2022 Fire Awards honorees, who were featured in OBJ's April 29-May 5, 2022, weekly print edition.

The Orlando-based company is an e-learning and learning technology provider that develops educational products for corporate, association, academic, medical and nonprofit clients.

Here's more from Jack McGrath, president and creative director:

Describe your company in three sentences or less: Our mission is to combine learning technology with our team of developers, artists and instructional designers to make your people smarter and faster with training that sticks. We bring learning theory and digital technology together to create innovative learning that includes gamification, simulations and story.

What was your company’s biggest accomplishment of 2021? In 2003, Digitec launched Knowledge Direct, our online learning management platform. Since then, we’ve had well over 5 million users and had to manage many different software versions to meet a variety of use cases and industries. In 2021, we did a digital transformation that involved moving all our clients from an outdated legacy system to a cloud-based mobile-responsive platform, migrating over 50 client deployments and customizations to a single code base.

How did you get it done? We did a code freeze on our existing client sites in 2020, then spent the year migrating each individual client and all their learners, customizations and reporting data. This was a huge task that our internal development team managed.

How does your company stay innovative and on the cutting-edge? We compete with global companies and continually assess the competitive landscape and innovate. We follow the “Lean Startup” philosophy, releasing new applications almost annually, learning from the results to refine our product offerings and roadmap. Our clients are our greatest source of research. By managing a customer success team, we’re able to design solutions that solve real-world problems.

What strategies have you implemented to recruit and/or retain talent in a competitive labor market? We follow a “build” versus “buy” mentality, when it comes to employees. We use internships to recruit talent who share our values and culture, then train them in-house. By continually focusing on a talent pipeline, we’re able to continually develop future leaders.

What is the biggest challenge facing your industry? As boomers have been retiring, we’ve been seeing a growing skills gap problem across many industries. Training and development is the key to upskilling the next generation, but traditional training approaches are losing effectiveness. Digitec is passionate about designing truly innovative training technology that can help make the workforce “smarter faster.”

What is your company’s top goal for 2022? Launching a new platform in 2022 to help midsize organizations onboard, develop and manage sales professionals

In the past year, what progress have you seen in the growth of Central Florida’s entrepreneurial and tech ecosystems? We have been seeing more tech companies opening up and finding investors and investment capital finally moving in from other sectors, including Silicon Valley. In the past, Central Florida was known primarily for tourism, but that is changing and the ecosystem seems to be developing here.

What is the local technology and innovation sector’s biggest obstacle to more growth? Investment
