A California-based health care research company has chosen Nashville for its third location.

Axis Research and Technologies has opened a bioskills training facility and cadaver lab space at 1420 Donelson Pike, according to a news release.

Catering to medical device companies and hospitals, the 10,000-square-foot space provides facilities for medical device testing, research and skills training — including tissue sourcing precision specimen preparation and high-tech surgery suites, according to the release.

The opening is another sign of the Nashville health care industry’s efforts to expand outside of its hospital roots. While the city is rich in major health care services firms, such as HCA Healthcare Inc. (NYSE: HCA), Community Health Systems Inc. (NYSE: CYH) and Acadia Healthcare (Nasdaq: ACHC), Nashville lags behind places such as Chicago and Boston in medical device companies.

That lead is tightening, however, as companies like Medacta USA and Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. (NYSE: TMO) open operations in Middle Tennessee.

Irvine, California-based Axis also has locations in Irvine and Columbia, Maryland, according to the release

“Nashville is a growing medical device community attracting some of the most respected names in the industry,” Axis CEO Nick Moran said in the release. “As a company committed to driving healthcare innovation through our high-tech, high-touch research and training facilities, Axis made the strategic decision to expand our geographic footprint to accommodate the needs of this booming MedTech marketplace. We are excited to continue our expansion with our next location opening in Chattanooga in January 2022 to cater to the thriving hospital sector in that community and its bordering states.”
