A Froedtert Health-owned medical laboratory business is collaborating with HealthEco of Denver to launch Atalan, which they said is a technology-enabled clinical partnership that will serve physicians and medical centers nationwide.

HealthEco is an investment and strategic advisory firm that partners with health systems to produce growth strategies that can be scaled across the health care ecosystem, according to the company’s website. HealthEco is led by former hospital executives and venture capital partners.

A spokeswoman for Atalan didn’t immediately respond to questions about the financial arrangement between Wauwatosa-based Froedtert Health and HealthEco.

Atalan is based in Milwaukee with offices in Denver and New Orleans, according to a Thursday press release. Steve Serota, president and chief operating officer of Froedtert-owned Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories, is the CEO of Atalan.

The network will provide a single, comprehensive platform to enable access to high-value laboratory services that ultimately will improve patient diagnostics and care, HealthEco president and CEO Jami Youmans said in a Thursday press release.

The Atalan platform allows any provider to access high-quality diagnostics without having to buy expensive equipment, hire pathologists or lose access to their patients, Robin Herbner, chief administrative officer at Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories, said in the press release.

“For health systems, this means creating profit instead of losing dollars by referring a patient’s test elsewhere,” Herbner said.

Serota said giving physicians and medical centers access to such “laboratory services will dramatically improve the speed of diagnosis, and as a result, treatment.”

The Atalan Network features high-end esoteric laboratory testing, sub-specialty pathologists and complete compendiums, according to the company’s LinkedIn page. Atalan provides “technology necessary to compete in the commercial lab industry, and ultimately, improve patient outcomes,” the site states.

Atalan will roll out its offerings the week of Oct. 8 in Las Vegas at HLTH 2023, a major health care industry innovation event.

Froedtert Health has been working with HealthEco to generate new revenue and boost margins, according to an earlier press release.

“HealthEco gives us the ability to create a roadmap and continue to collaborate with other like-minded health systems to capitalize on new opportunities,” Froedtert’s chief financial officer and executive vice president Scott Hawig said in the previous press release.

Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories is a limited liability company based at the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center in Wauwatosa.

The business provides a full spectrum of laboratory services from routine to esoteric, using cutting-edge technologies in a variety of disciplines, according to its website. Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories said it partners with pathologists and other experts at the Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin health network, as well as many health care organizations throughout the region.

Wisconsin Diagnostic Laboratories posted total revenue of about $106 million and $16.3 million net income for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2022, according to Froedtert Health’s latest full-year audited financial report.
