Milwaukee, Madison drop toward bottom of ranking of best cities for women in tech

Milwaukee and Madison, the two largest cities in Wisconsin, have worsened as metros that are desirable for women in technology, according to new study.

Of the 63 largest cities in the U.S., SmartAsset determined Milwaukee was the 43rd best city, while Madison ranked No. 59.

In 2018, Milwaukee was ranked the 18th-best place in the U.S. for women to have a career in technology, and dropped to No. 38 in 2019. Madison was No. 45 in 2018, and No. 54 in 2019.

In its 2021 study, SmartAsset reports female tech workers in Milwaukee were listed as earning 84% of what their male counterparts do, with income after housing costs at $43,483. In Madison, women in tech earn 80% of their male counterparts, with income after housing costs at $43,974.

Roughly 28% of tech jobs in Milwaukee are filled by women, while 22.8% of those jobs are filled by women in Madison. On a national scale, women earn 83% of what men make in the tech industry, occupy 26% of tech-related jobs, and have an average income after housing costs of $57,509.

To compile its ranking, SmartAsset used 2019 according to Census Bureau data. Arlington, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Maryland ranked as the top three metros for women in tech in 2021, per SmartAsset.
