New York-based Genesis10 is launching its Dev10 software developer training program in Milwaukee and will collaborate with the MKE Tech Hub Coalition on producing more developers in the metro area.

One of the main purposes of the Tech Hub Coalition is to double the number of tech workers in the metropolitan area from roughly 76,000 today to 150,000 by 2025.

As of the end of 2017, there were 6,513 software developers working in the seven-county Milwaukee region, according to a study conducted by Austin, Texas-based TIP Strategies. Through 2023, Milwaukee's tech cluster is projected to generate 2,428 job openings for software developers. That figure didn’t include Foxconn's developer needs in the region.

In 2019, the median salary for a software developer in the U.S. was $101,790. In greater Milwaukee, that job has an annual mean salary of $90,470.

“One of the benefits of the Coalition is the ability to drive collaboration from the regional tech employers, which enabled Dev10 to invest in starting this new program in Milwaukee,” said Kathy Henrich, CEO for the Milwaukee Tech Hub Coalition.

Northwestern Mutual and Kohl’s, two of the founding companies of the coalition, are supporting an inaugural Dev10 class in Milwaukee. Genesis10 has two offices in Wisconsin, one in Madison and another in downtown Milwaukee.

“Northwestern Mutual continues to look for non-traditional methods of developing and sourcing tech talent,” said James Hischke, senior director of tech advancement and outreach at Northwestern Mutual.

Hischke is also chair of the coalition’s advisory committee. “Dev10’s approach to software developer training is well suited for the Milwaukee market and I’m excited for its potential impact,” he said.

In 2019, U.S. News & World Report released a report stating the No. 1-rated job to have in the U.S. was software developer, which topped the list for the second consecutive year. Between 2016 and 2026, a projected 255,400 software developer jobs will be available, according to the report. The list was based on median salary, stress level, 10-year growth volume, work-life balance, employment rate, opportunity for advancement and 10-year growth percentage.
