Bemis Manufacturing boosts investment in medical device company

Bemis Manufacturing Co., a Sheboygan Falls-based global maker of bathroom and health care products, is increasing its investment in a New York startup that developed an in-home cardiovascular monitoring device.

Casana, previously known as Heart Health Intelligence Inc., recently closed on a $14 million funding round that included follow-on capital from Bemis Manufacturing. In 2020, Bemis led a $2.2 million seed round in the Rochester, New York-based company, which developed The Heart Seat, an internet-connected toilet seat that captures cardiac data from the patient’s home.

Cambridge, Massachusetts-based General Catalyst and the Outsiders Fund, which is operated from New York, led the recent funding round for Casana, according to a news release.

Casana will apply their new financing toward bringing the product to market and to accelerate studying the benefits of an internet-of-things heart health device for heart failure patients in collaboration with health systems and risk-bearing organizations, including the University of Florida and Villages Health.

In addition to making an investment, Casana previously stated Bemis Manufacturing also is partnering with the company to produce The Heart Seat. Casana was founded in 2018 based on research from the Rochester Institute of Technology and in partnership with the University of Rochester Medical Center.

Bemis Manufacturing has more than 1,600 employees in six countries across the globe.
