Madison startup TCARE has landed a contract with the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services to expand its family caregiver support program in the state.

TCARE announced this week that it received a $900,000 contract from the state of Washington to continue to grow its software platform that family caregivers use to keep their loved ones at home longer.

TCARE, founded in 2007 at UW-Milwaukee, makes software for health insurance providers that allows them to help caregivers take care of their sick and elderly family members at home, as opposed to placing them in assisted living facilities. TCARE’s platform allows social workers to give caregivers the support they need to help prevent burnout. Social workers and caregivers can communicate on the platform and create individualized care plans for elderly family members. Social workers can provide caregivers with talk therapy, support groups and even interventions.

TCARE has worked with the state of Washington for several years, and the state was one of TCARE's original research partners. TCARE says it has saved the state's Medicaid budget over $20 million by reducing Medicaid LTC claims and delaying nursing home placement. Caregivers in Washington who received the TCARE intervention demonstrated lower levels of stress and depression, the startup said.

TCARE currently works wth over 250 organizations in 22 states. It has raised more than $1.2 million in venture capital funding, and recently participated in high-profile startup accelerators such as gener8tor and MassChallenge’s HealthTech accelerator in Boston.
