It has been two months since the announcement that xAI planned to build a supercomputer in Memphis, potentially the largest investment in city history, by dollar amount. In early July, xAI posted its first jobs listings for the project — mainly positions related to installing fiber optic cabling.

More recently, two additional postings have been added. And the descriptions of some of the initial roles have been updated, including dropping pay ranges, switching a position from Memphis-based to remote, and changing titles.

The latest posting is titled "People Generalist" and has an annual salary range of $110,000 to $135,000. The listing outlines many HR responsibilities spanning the full duration of employees' tenures, including recruitment, policy enforcement, and on- and off-boarding. It said a qualified applicant would have a bachelor's degree and three years of experience.

"This is an in-person role based in Memphis, TN that requires up to 10% travel," the People Generalist description said.

The other new position is for a "Senior Data Center Operations Technician," but it doesn't specify a pay range. The position's responsibilities include managing and troubleshooting hardware, infrastructure, and other equipment.

One key change to a previously announced job is for "Protective Intelligence Lead." That role was originally identified as being based in Memphis. The job description now indicates that it is remote, rather than being located in Memphis. It is otherwise identical to before.

In early July, seven of the eight original job postings included pay-range details. While all those listings are still live in some form, four of them no longer specify a pay range. As of Aug. 8, just three Memphis job postings have stated pay ranges.

Two other job listings that changed now have updated titles: "Superintendent" has become "Construction Superintendent," and "Foreman" is now "Fiber Foreman." Other than those title changes and the removal of pay ranges, their links and postings are identical to their original form.

Since the beginning, it has not been made clear how many jobs the xAI project at the former Electrolux would create. Sources early on told MBJ that it would probably mean a job count in the low to mid hundreds. But no official target or expectation has been stated.

In addition to the nine Memphis-based xAI's job postings, there are 26 other positions, a majority of them based in California, where xAI is headquartered. While CEO Elon Musk recently announced that two of his other companies would be moving from California to Texas, a recent internal email suggests that xAI would stay in the Golden State.

According to an email obtained and reported on by The New York Times, the Musk-owned X plans to move workers from the existing San Francisco office to an engineering-focused space that it would share with xAI in Palo Alto.
