FedEx Corp. recently announced its plan to create a data-driven commerce platform to help businesses more easily manage fulfillment, increase conversion, and better track returns.

The delivery services company is calling the new platform fdx, which it expects to enhance the "entire customer journey" by offering an “end-to-end e-commerce solutions for businesses of all sizes — all in one platform.”

The move comes as competition with traditional rival UPS — and more recently with an e-commerce giant — ramps up. The new fdx platform could better position FedEx against competitors like Seattle-based Amazon.

“FedEx is transforming into a digitally-led business powered by our extensive physical transportation network, leveraging our scale and insights from moving 15 million packages per day,” said FedEx president and CEO Raj Subramaniam, in a news release. “Through fdx, we will enhance our longstanding relationships with merchants of all sizes to help them optimize and grow their businesses through digital intelligence.”

FedEx plans to launch fdx in fall 2024. The platform is currently available in a private preview mode upon request for businesses, which interested companies can sign up for to learn more information.

FedEx aims to give merchants additional data and insights by using fdx, potentially improving visibility and capabilities and informing "strategic logistics decisions."

In its announcement, the Memphis-based company highlighted two additional features that will be part of the fdx launch: optimizing order fulfillment and creating a custom post-purchase experience.

Order fulfillment optimization with fdx is set to "integrate real-time FedEx network insights into order management systems," with the goal of identifying optimal shipping routes and speeds to create efficient, cost-saving deliveries. And FedEx looks to match brand standards post-purchase via fdx, including greater access to delivery dates and accurate shipment updates.
