In the spring, OpenAI released GPT-4, the latest version of its text-generating artificial intelligence (AI) program that's advanced enough to process images and pass standardized tests with high marks.

Now, it’s also caught the attention of Memphis’ largest private company — which is using GPT-4 to underpin a new application.

Sedgwick — a provider of claims administration and risk management services to corporations, insurance companies, and public entities — has launched Sidekick, an internal program that uses the GPT-4 technology and is expected to give its claims professionals an advantage in their work.

“Sidekick is designed to supercharge our claims professionals — to help them move through some of the administrative tasks of claims management at speeds never before possible," said Mike Arbour, Sedgwick's CEO, in a press release. "Automating important but routine aspects of our work processes will help them gain value from information more quickly, relay it back to our clients efficiently, and dedicate more time to the people whose care is entrusted to them."

But what are some initial examples of how Sidekick will be used?

Employees are set to be able to scan documents to produce automated content summaries and easily add highlights to the appropriate claims file. They're also expected to use the application to quickly uncover key data points, which should help them complete tasks and impact claims.

And that could just be the beginning. Sedgwick leaders believe future iterations of the application may be able to produce entire claim summaries, identify risk factors on individual claims and programs, and explore emerging data trends.

Though this is Sedgwick’s first use case of GPT, it’s not the company’s first time working with AI. Already, it has several AI-powered tools, including smart.ly, mySedgwick, and viaOne. The company has 2,000 IT resources and data scientists and often looks to bring technology solutions to employees and insurers.

Overall, Sedgwick has about 1,300 local employees and over 30,000 total employees across 65 countries. In 2021, it earned $4.04 billion in revenue, according to MBJ research.
