One of the largest multicultural tech conferences is bringing a virtual summit to the area for diverse entrepreneurs.
On Sept. 3, AfroTech will hold “Building your Startup in the South,” in conjunction with event cosponsors Epicenter and We Are Memphis. This is the first AfroTech summit focused on the Memphis-area startup ecosystem.
The annual AfroTech Conference is held in the San Francisco Bay Area and has an emphasis on serving Black startup founders and tech professionals.
Events are aimed at helping Black and minority-led startups expand their business knowledge, network with peers, and learn best practices.
“Partnering with AfroTech — the largest Black tech conference and digital platform in the world — supports our mission to create a culture of entrepreneurship in Memphis, a city where Black people make up the majority of the population,” Leslie Lynn Smith, president and CEO of Epicenter, said in a release.
The half-day virtual summit will include a panel of regional startup founders talking about launching their companies in the South, including Erica Plybeah-Hemphill, CEO and founder of MedHaul; Kayla Rodriguez Graff, CEO and cofounder of SweetBio; and Nanette Bean, president and CEO of Leasing Angels. The panel discussion will be moderated by Fallon Wilson, CEO of Black in Tech Nashville and research director of Black Tech Mecca.
The summit will also feature a fireside chat with Epicenter's Smith, moderated by Will Lucas, brand manager for AfroTech.com

“In addition to uplifting Black entrepreneurs in the Mid-South, we want to make it clear that Black-led tech firms in Memphis and across the country will find the supportive ecosystem here to successfully launch and build their businesses,” Smith said.
