As the founder of a roofing company, Allan Arias is used to reaching for the top. That work is paying off, with Compass Roofing LLC now working on some of Kansas City’s biggest projects and Arias being honored by the U.S. Small Business Administration as the 2023 Missouri Small Business Person of the Year.

The SBA named Arias among the top small business owners in each of the states in advance of this year’s National Small Business Week. Also honored is Jordan Michael Harris, owner and chief visionary officer of Harris Dream Clean LLC in Wichita, the 2023 Kansas Small Business Person of the Year.

Arias came to the United States in 1994 from Costa Rica and started Kansas City-based Compass Roofing in 2012.

Compass is a SBA 8(a) certified business that installs commercial roofs, foundation waterproofing and general contracting. The company’s contracts have included work on the new $1.5 billion Kansas City International Airport terminal and projects for Kansas City Public Schools, the Belton School District, and on the Kansas City Municipal Courthouse, according to its website.

The company has grown to 25 employees and revenue of $3.6 million, according to an SBA release.
