Innovative practices in education are critical to growth and change. Contrary to popular belief, there is more to innovation in education than simply advancements in technology or virtual options. Innovation in education can be as complex as overhauling curriculum and work spaces. Or as simple as doing things in a new way, using new and different pathways, processes, and strategies to ensure the same goal: the success of all students.

Innovation in education ensures today’s classrooms are filled with students who develop stronger communication skills and are more prepared than ever for college and the workforce.

Here are three innovative education practices which prepare students for a global, competitive workforce in the 21st century and lead to better overall outcomes for students and teachers.

Experiential Learning

Experiential Learning is the innovative educational process of learning through experiences and by reflecting on those experiences. Activities include hands-on laboratory experiments, internships, field exercises, trips abroad, undergraduate research and studio performances. It works to foster students’ curiosity and exploration through immersive learning and reflection. Through a multi-faceted approach, experiential learning drives collaboration and allows students to learn in the classroom and transfer skills into real-world experiences they can take with them into their communities.

Cutting-edge collaborations

Collaboration has always been a cornerstone of education. And taking a more innovative approach to collaborations by partnering with leading, cutting-edge, and groundbreaking institutions helps students prepare for life after school. Innovative educational collaborations provide opportunities for students to tackle real-world challenges across all subjects in relevant ways. Students don’t just collaborate with each other, they are encouraged to step outside cultural boundaries and connect with each other in meaningful ways. They are also encouraged to try new methods of self-expression, communication, and critical thinking. Innovative collaborations can also enable students to apply their skills to real-world situations, preparing them for college or their career.

Social Emotional Learning

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is a relatively new concept in education which takes into consideration the social and emotional aspects of a student’s life and forms educational practices around providing the tools, strategies, and support they need to be successful at school.

The Committee for Children, a national organization who researches and develops educational programs to advance the safety and well-being of children, explains, “Social-emotional learning (SEL) is the process of developing the self-awareness, self-control, and interpersonal skills that are vital for school, work, and life success.”

As all students today adapt to a new normal, SEL helps them navigate challenges within their physical environment or traumatic experiences to find success in school. SEL also helps with interpersonal skills such as working in teams and resolving conflicts And can help students who learn and think differently talk about their challenges and build self-esteem. Extensive research shows a correlation between the skills taught in SEL programs and academic achievement, positive behavior, and healthier life choices.

Innovation in education is more than new technology or virtual classrooms. It is finding new processes and strategies to ensure students are successful and prepared for college and the workforce. Innovative education practices prepare students by teaching them new learning methods and how to reflect on experiences, the importance of innovative collaboration, and the link between their social and emotional needs to their academic success.
