Houston-based aerospace technology firm Cognitive Space was selected to participate in the new Amazon Web Services Space Accelerator, the company announced July 6.

Unveiled earlier this year, the AWS Space Accelerator is a four-week program for space startups using AWS applications to solve industry challenges. The program will provide technical, business and mentoring resources to 10 early-stage companies selected to participate in the Space Accelerator.

Cognitive Space uses artificial intelligence to help organizations manage and optimize space assets, including automated systems for satellite operations, revenue and performance yield, modeling and simulation and more. Through its participation in the AWS Space Accelerator, Cognitive Space will receive up to $100,000 in AWS Activate credit, cloud training and support, mentorship and other development resources. Seraphim, an investment firm focused on the space industry, will provide business development and investment guidance to the participating companies.

"Being one of the few startups accepted into the AWS Space Accelerator is a great honor and we appreciate the confidence AWS has placed in us," said Scott Herman, CEO of Cognitive Space. "We’re very excited about the mentoring opportunity that the accelerator provides to startups like ours, and we look forward to working closely with AWS and Seraphim as we build our company."

Cognitive Space will use the AWS Cloud infrastructure for its underlying platform architecture, licensed services, development and testing, the company said. The Houston-based company was selected to the AWS accelerator from an applicant pool of some 200 space startups. Cognitive Space works with commercial enterprises, the federal government and the U.S. Department of Defense.

Earlier this year, a separate aerospace-focused accelerator program in Houston was launched. The Ion's Aerospace Innovation Accelerator for Minority Business Enterprises, launched in April, was created to address disparities within the aerospace industry and to help diverse startups innovate and grow their businesses.
