Serial health care entrepreneur Dr. Kimon Angelides has launched a new venture in Houston focused on women's health services.

Angelides previously founded six health care companies, including Livongo — formerly EosHealth — a developer of personal glucose monitors for diabetes patients. Last year, Mountain View, California-based Livongo was acquired by Teladoc Health (NYSE: TDOC) in a deal valued at $18.5 billion. Angelides also founded Houston-based Vivante Health, a venture-backed startup focused on relief for chronic gastrointestinal symptoms and gut health.

Now, Angelides has launched Houston-based FemTec Health, a health and beauty sciences company, out of stealth mode. The firm is building a data analytics platform to translate consumer, genetic, microbiome and biometric data into delivering personalized health care services for women.

FemTec Health is also focused on acquisitions in order to "provide continuity and coordination of care" for its users. FemTec Health acquired subscription beauty box company Birchbox, as well as Mira Beauty, a seller of makeup, skincare and other beauty products, to accelerate its growth. FemTec also acquired health care social marketing platform Liquid Grids.

"Our first acquisitions within women’s health and beauty are key to our mission to revolutionize the women’s health care and beauty industry," said Angelides, executive chairman and interim CEO of FemTec Health. "Women deserve a comprehensive, all-encompassing model designed specifically for them. The starting point is to really understand a woman's health care needs and then apply smart technology like AI and predictive analytics to translate the data into actionable outcomes."

While founded in May 2020, FemTec Health officially launched with over 10 million members, a team of more than 150 employees and $38 million in investor funding, the company said Oct. 28. The team includes Chief Scientific Officer Kimberly Capone, who was previously head of Johnson & Johnson's microbiome platform, according to her LinkedIn profile.

Capone said that she believes women's health has long been under-researched and underfunded. As a woman and a scientist, Capone said she's often been the sounding board for friends and family on their health care and wellness journeys.

"What I hear consistently is that women do not know where to go or what products to choose that may help," Capone said. "This is where FemTec Health’s unified and coordinated platform comes in — we provide personalized services and science-based products that are meaningful and effective for women at all stages of their lives."

FemTec Health plans to announce its consumer offering later this year, including the relaunch of Birchbox and shifting to personalized, curated products using its analytics platform, BiomeAI.
