For people in need of mental health care, finding a licensed therapist that fits your needs can be difficult and stressful.

About 19 percent of adults in the United States, or 43.8 million people, experience some type of mental illness, such as depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder, in a given year, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

With a shortage of providers, many people struggle to find the care they need.

Denver startup SonderMind, which launched in 2014, is dedicated to making behavioral health more accessible, building a marketplace to connect patients with providers.

The company announced this week that it has closed a $3 million Series A round to help further build out the platform. The round was led by Diōko Ventures, a firm which invests in fast-growing healthcare companies, and included Jonathan Bush, Crawley Ventures, Notley Ventures and Preview Ventures. In addition, existing investors Kickstart Seed Fund, Lanoha Ventures and other shareholders also participated in the round.

The funds will be used to support the ongoing launch of SonderMind’s behavioral health product, the SonderMind Solution, a platform that matches clients who are a clinical fit with behavioral health experts, while handling payments and insurance reimbursement.

The offering also includes an electronic health record system, mobile app with voice notes functionality, calendar and messaging.

According to a release, SonderMind will also hire personnel to scale its offering across the country. The company currently operates in Colorado and has plans plans to use the funds to expand to Austin and Phoenix.

“SonderMind is committed to making access to therapists and behavioral healthcare professionals easier so that people can find the right provider, schedule visits easily and use their insurance to pay for the support they need,” Mark Frank, co-founder and CEO of SonderMind, said in a statement. “For mental health providers, the SonderMind Solution includes a lightweight electronic health record system, practice management tools and access to a matching platform that takes into account clinical match and mutual preferences, all of which allows providers to focus on providing great care, while SonderMind takes care of the rest.”

SonderMind has over 200 in-network, licensed behavioral health providers across 150 specialty areas of practice. SonderMind is free for therapists to join, as the company collects the appointment fees and pays rates depending on license level, service provided and more.

The company previously raised a $2.5 million seed round in 2018 and has raised nearly $6 million to date, according to Crunchbase.
