Denver Diaper Subscription Startup Aims to Eliminate the 'Diaper Graveyard'

Amanda and Lance Little would do anything to avoid the diaper graveyard.

With two daughters under 10, the married duo is all too familiar with the struggles associated with diapers. They understand the late night trips to the supermarket to get a box of diapers that likely won’t fit in a month as the children grow.

Those small diapers would end up in a pile, hidden away in the aptly named diaper graveyard.

“One of the things we wanted to try to overcome was the diaper graveyard,” Lance said.

Not only were they aware of the waste of diapers, Amanda said the price for premium diapers was exorbitant.

“We wanted to use high quality products, free of harmful chemicals, but do it for an affordable price and we saw a hole in the market,” she said.

In 2016, the couple created ABBY&FINN, a diaper subscription box that grows with your baby.

In each $45 subscription box, parents receive two different sizes of ABBY&FINN diapers to ensure they still have a diaper that fits as their child grows. Each box comes with between 120 and 200 diapers, depending on size choices. Customers can also adjust the frequency of the shipment, with ABBY&FINN offering options of every two, three, four or five weeks.

The company's diapers are soft and sensitive, created with comfort and absorbency features for babies.

The Denver-based startup also offers fragrance free, natural baby wipes that can be added to any diaper subscription for an additional $10 a month.

Amanda and Lance said ABBY&FINN offer premium diapers and wipes for prices that most traditional diaper companies can’t match.

“Where we’re different from the competition is our price point is 25 to 30 percent less expensive than the other premium brands,” Lance said.

The company is also giving back, donating 30 diapers per subscription to partner organizations in four states. To date, the company has donated nearly 500,000 diapers to families in need.

Earlier this month, along with partners at WeeCycle, ABBY&FINN donated 17,500 diapers to TSA workers at Denver International Airport who were affected by the recent government shutdown.

As the company grows, Amanda said they hope to find more partnerships across the country to provide this critical need to families.

The subscription service officially launched in April 2018, and the couple said feedback has been incredible over the first 11 months. As they grow, Lance said they’ll keep a focus on baby-specific items, steering clear of more general cleaning items.

“We want to stay focused on a baby’s daily consumption. That will allow us to build more trust with mom and dad by having focus on those categories,” he said.

The six-person ABBY&FINN team has raised a total of $1.2 million to date and will look for another raise and hiring round in the coming weeks and months. ABBY&FINN was recently named a finalist for the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce's Startup Business of the Year.
