Colorado didn't land the 25,000 job grand prize that came along with HQ2, but Amazon has continued to slowly grow its local presence in the year and a half following the announcement.
The tech giant will now add 1,000 full-time jobs in Colorado Springs, as it plans to open a new 800,000-square-foot fulfillment center in the city.
"We're excited to open a new, state-of-the-art fulfillment center in Colorado Springs. Colorado has a talented workforce, and we are very excited to grow employment beyond the more than 4,000 associates already serving customers in the state," Alicia Boler Davis, Amazon's VP of Global Customer Fulfillment, said in a statement.
Salaries at the facility will start at $15 an hour with comprehensive benefits. Amazon will fulfill customer orders such as books, electronics and toys from this fulfillment center.
“The arrival of this incredibly successful and innovative company brings with it a wealth of good-paying jobs in our Southeast quadrant and continued positive growth at the Colorado Springs Airport," Mayor John Suthers said in a statement. "I commend the Colorado Springs Airport, the city’s economic development division and our partners at the Colorado Springs Chamber and EDC for yet another very positive development for the City of Colorado Springs.”
This is Amazon's second Colorado expansion announcement in the last year.
In April 2019, Amazon announced an expansion of its Denver Tech Hub, with plans to create 400 new jobs in software and hardware engineering, cloud computing and advertising.
To accommodate these hiring plans, Amazon opened a new office in the city at 1515 Wynkoop St. in the LoDo neighborhood, joining the company’s Boulder office which opened in 2018. This expansion allowed Amazon to more than double its tech workforce in the Denver area.
