This episode of The Workforce Podcast is presented by Jones Lang LaSalle.

In this episode, we are joined by Ryan Severino. He is the chief economist at JLL where he manages the economics team and is responsible for global and regional economic research, analysis and forecasting as well as property market forecasting. Additionally, Ryan currently serves as an Adjunct Professor of finance and economics at Columbia University and New York University.

Ryan shares that history informs some of the path forward for the economy, but we are facing a unique situation.

"I am very fond of saying, when I talk about economics, that the two most dangerous thoughts in economics are 'this time is different' and 'that will never happen again'. This time really is different. We are dealing with a pandemic in a way that we have not in more than 100 years."

Ryan explores the potential growth paths for the economy and what variables have the greatest likelihood of influencing that recovery. He points out that a rebound in the third quarter is likely as the economy reopens from a state of lockdown, but the ceiling for that growth faces interesting questions in terms of total economic activity and capacity. Ryan highlights that the ability to manage COVID hotspots and additional waves of infections will be central to economic growth and how business leaders prepare for the future.

Additionally, Ryan shares the economist perspective on lagging productivity growth in what feels like the era of technology to many. Listen to hear Ryan's thoughts on the impact of automation and artificial intelligence on the labor market and the future of work.

In partnership with American Inno, Taylor McLemore, managing director of the Techstars Workforce Development Accelerator, is debuting a new podcast exploring the relationship of technology and work.

The Workforce Podcast explores the boundaries of education and the future of work to understand how and why people labor. The conversations search for an understanding of problems and opportunities in the workforce, enabling entrepreneurs and innovators to build a better future.

The podcast brings together a diverse group of people and perspectives: startup founders, investors, company executives, education influencers, government leaders and community innovators.
