The “In Their Own Words” series is a collection of short columns from influential Colorado startup founders. After a tumultuous 2020, Inno wanted to give Colorado's startup community an opportunity to reflect on the highs and lows of the last 12 months, and share how they'll work smarter and better in the next 12. Each columnist was asked to answer the question: How are you and your company preparing for 2021?

For the TiLT team, 2020 was an incredible accelerant for the pain point that we’re solving.

Caregiving was brought out of the closet during the pandemic, and it’s not going back in. The realization that employees have families, dependents and lives outside of work can no longer be ignored or swept under the rug.

In addition, the work-from-home normalization has been a juxtaposition of the feasibility of the productivity possibilities from anywhere — and the immense weight caregivers carry when school, daycares and assisted living facilities are not an option.

With these factors, TiLT went through an incredible year of growth in 2020, all while navigating a remote startup team, Covid positive tests in our TiLT families and school shutdowns.

We’ve 4x increased our teams’ headcount and 10x increased our client portfolio. However, these tailwinds haven’t been all sunshine and roses. This kind of growth, while trying to take care of ourselves, our families and one another has been a masterclass in taking it one day, and sometimes one hour at a time.

As we look forward to 2021, we plan to continue to listen to our customers with an acute awareness that we’re still all figuring this out as we go. We have to read between the lines better than ever before, predict trends and see around corners in our HR tech space.

We know that we’re helping people navigate leave in ways never seen before.

There is so much more we can do to truly revolutionize leave in the workplace and we can’t wait to continue to learn, scale and help even more caregivers, expecting parents, managers and HR leaders in 2021.

We’re incredibly optimistic that the world of work will find a new normal in 2021 that turns the rhetoric of ‘work-life balance’ into results. The future of employee benefits is very exciting and we plan to be on the front lines demonstrating the ROI for companies, employees and society.
