A Dayton-area medical startup with a potential global reach will present its findings at a large cardiology conference in London.
MedsEngine will take part in the European Society of Cardiology’s (ESC) 2024 meeting. It will be joined by NI Medical to present a comprehensive analysis of their management of hypertension.
This analysis shows combining NI Medical’s hemodynamic data with MedsEngine’s clinical decision support software has created a significant reduction in strokes and heart attacks.
Their initial analysis presented at the ESC 2023 meeting included the treatment of 14,698 patients using NICaS data and MedsEngine. The study showed a 90% control of hypertension compared to the U.S. national average of 50%.
Roughly $4.2 trillion is spent on healthcare related to the management of chronic diseases, according to the CDC. This accounts for 90% of the $4.7 trillion spent on healthcare nationally. These numbers are estimated to rise in the coming years. MedsEngine aims to solve this problem with its personalized medication recommendations.
“Treating hypertension using NICaS-based hemodynamic data coupled with MedsEngine’s decision support could play a pivotal role in reducing stroke, heart attack and heart failure,” said Dr. Douglas Romer, CMO of Dayton-based MedsEngine.
MedsEngine began in 2004 but has since evolved over the years into what it is today. The small company of five people believes its software has the ability to be used worldwide. The idea for MedsEngine stemmed from the confusion doctors may have when it comes to treating patients dealing with chronic ailments. For example, a heart patient may be prescribed various medications, some of which may not be necessary. In addition, patients may not be taking their medication in the time frame in which is necessary for optimum results.
MedsEngine — which was acquired earlier this year by a local investment group — is developing an electronic health record integrated clinical decision support applications that generate real-time, personalized, evidence-based medication recommendations for chronic conditions like hypertension, cholesterol management, type 2 diabetes and heart failure.
