A new kind of healthcare has settled into the Dayton region with a focus on improved access to care for patients.
Dr. Nick Davis started his own family medicine concierge practice, one of the first of its kind in the region, to settle his frustrations with the healthcare system’s lack of accessibility for patients.
Davis said the national healthcare system has become too big to the point of healthcare no longer being about the patients. He started Nick Davis MD and Associates, LLC in Miamisburg to provide better care and access — eliminating the common headaches and hurdles put up by the modern healthcare system.
The membership-based practice operates on traditional practice and preventative care but allows a higher level of individualized care. Davis said he values the ability to extend appointments beyond the national seven-minute average to cover topics such as screenings and the effects of patient life on health.
“The difference is mainly the time I spend with patients, how I educate patients on things, and some of the newer technologies, being able to incorporate the best of the newest stuff in an evidence-based way,” Davis said.
Membership fees are paid annually and cover most parts of primary care including wellness visits, simple procedures, blood work, testing and regular visits. However, Davis encourages patients to continue to pay for insurance at a high deductible to cover necessary specialty care or hospital visits.
“I think there's cost savings there because we can keep people out of urgent cares, keep people out of ERs, catch some of these chronic diseases earlier and have better management of them,” Davis said.
Employers in the area are also showing an interest in the practice. Some have offered it as an option to employees to add onto their insurance to encourage healthier workplaces and increased employee attendance, Davis said.
The increasing prevalence of high deductible plans paired with health savings accounts or flexible spending accounts over the last decade has not prompted any federal changes for the pharmaceutical concierge industry, Davis said. He said the practice has been blocked from using those plans to pay membership fees as it is not an IRS qualified expense.
Davis said the change will require political acceptance on a national scale. However, in the meantime, Davis is offering care to almost 250 patients. He said the clinic will stop accepting patients around 500, or sooner, depending on different factors.
“It depends on how many home visits I'm doing, how sick are my patients and what's the average age,” Davis said. “All of those things.”
