With an influx of cash from a funding round last year, a local health care-focused startup is expanding its reach and offerings with a new acquisition.
Plano-based integrated digital health platform VitalTech announced acquiring senior engagement platform Breezie, which is based in the Pittsburgh area. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“The strategic acquisition of Breezie will further our ability to meet the needs of… home health and senior patients… built to serve their needs, irrespective of their technical capabilities," said James Hamilton, CEO at VitalTech, in a prepared statement. “Engagement is critical for quality of care.”
VitalTech was launched originally as a biosensor company. Its platform connects to those wearable sensors to provide real-time patient monitoring to improve health outcomes and patient care. Breezie, which was launched in 2011, is a platform designed to give seniors access to social media, streaming and online games.
With the merger, VitalTech plans to incorporate Breezie’s software into its VitalCare platform, expanding its social capabilities. The VitalCare platform also has modules for medication reminders, nutrition intake and communication tools for interacting with care teams remotely.
“The pace at which technology evolves is much faster than the pace at which you learn after a certain age," said Jeh Kazimi, founder of Breezie, in a prepared statement. "Even if you are digitally savvy today doesn't guarantee you'll be able to do everything in the future.”
The move comes after VitalTech landed a $8 million Series A funding round in September of last year, which was backed by health care investment firm Concord Health Partners and Stanley Ventures, the investment arm of Stanley Black & Decker.
According to Crunchbase.com, Breezie has received about $7.6 million in total funding and is backed by Ziegler and Clearly Social Angels.
The Dallas Business Journal reports that VitalTech has about 35 employees, while Breezie has less than 10.
