As the Metroplex continues to grow, cities across the region are looking for ways to solve congestion on the network of roadways that cross North Texas.
In many cities, alternatives to traditional transportation take the form of e-scooters, bikes and ridesharing. And what’s better than making transportation easy and accessible? Doing it for free.
Health and wellness-focused initiative Blue Zones Project has announced a plan to partner with Fort Worth Bike Sharing to provide residents with free rides for the first Friday of every month, starting on Jan. 3. With the promo code 92020, Panther City residents can access bikes at any of the city’s kiosks or through the BCycle app, through the program, called Free First Fri-Yay.
The program kicks off with a free five-mile group ride starting at Fort Worth Bike Sharing’s newest station at the city’s Gateway Park East trailhead. Residents are encouraged to reserve a bike early or bring their own for the event, which will include food and games.

“Not only is it a fun and convenient way to get around town, but it supports natural movement, social interaction and family time – Blue Zones principles known for supporting health and well-being,” said Jennifer Grissom, executive director of Fort Worth Bike Sharing, in a prepared statement.
Fort Worth Bike Sharing is a nonprofit organization in charge of operating Fort Worth B-Cycle, a division of Trek Bicycle-owned BCycle, which was founded in 2008 in Wisconsin. The company operates in 47 areas, including Austin and Houston. BCycle entered the Fort Worth market in April 2019, with a fleet of 50 electric bikes. It has since grown to operate about 350 bikes across 46 docking stations.
The Blue Zones Project is an organization led by Texas Health Resources that launched in Fort Worth in 2015 with the goal of improving resident’s health and wellbeing by helping to foster sustainable changes to the environment and people’s daily routines.
In 2020, Free First Fri-Yay dates will include Jan. 3, Feb. 7, March 6, April 3, May 1, June 5, July 3, Aug. 7, Sept. 4, Oct. 2, Nov. 6 and Dec. 4.
