Centerline Biomedical Inc., the medical technology developer in Cleveland, has hired a new CEO — Gulam Khan, the former president, CEO and co-chairman of U.S. Endoscopy in Mentor, Ohio.

Khan succeeds Philip Rackliffe, Centerline's CEO since October 2019, who appears to have left the Cleveland Clinic spinoff in August to join GE Healthcare as its president and CEO of image-guided therapies, according to Rackliffe's LinkedIn page.

Centerline Biomedical is commercializing a new way for surgeons to visualize and guide catheters, guidewires and stents in the human body while minimizing dependence on radiation and contrast agents.

The company describes its technology as a "3-D, GPS-like surgical navigation technology that improves endovascular procedure outcomes and reduces radiation exposure."

Khan has more than two decades of executive leadership experience, Centerline said in a statement.

He became senior vice president of procedural solutions at Steris plc when the longtime Mentor-based infection-protection company acquired U.S. Endoscopy — its next-door neighbor — in 2012 for $270 million in cash, according to Cleveland.com.

Khan also has been an operating partner at Shore Capital Partners in Chicago, serving as a board member for Innovia Medical and AA Medical, two Shore Capital portfolio companies, according to the investment firm's website.

In June, Centerline raised $33 million during an investment round led by Cleveland Clinic, making the Cleveland company the leader of Northeast Ohio venture capital deals during the second quarter.

At the time, Centerline Biomedical said it planned to use its new capital to propel the company's Intra-Operative Positioning Systems (IOPS) into new surgical applications, accelerate its commercial sales and expand it to Europe and other key markets in 2023.

"This is important technology and Centerline's mission checks every box of what a medical company should seek to achieve," Khan said in Centerline's statement.

GE Healthcare, Rackliffe's new employer, participated in Centerline Biomedical's recent fundraising round.
