The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. said it's introduced a new tire intelligence system for cargo van fleets that incorporates computerized sensors.
The Akron tire giant (Nasdaq: GT) said its SightLine intelligence system for cargo vans uses sensors with cloud-based algorithms to communicate with fleet operators in real-time. The company said the system will be expanded to its original equipment customers and other fleet operators later this year.
According to Goodyear, SightLine can predict breakdowns, minimize downtime and monitor tire pressure and wear. In the future, Goodyear said the system can be used to provide feedback on road conditions.
"Much like smart watches that monitor vitals like heart rates and oxygen levels, Goodyear SightLine’s tire intelligence monitors the health of a tire. Goodyear SightLine takes the mystery out of understanding tires and provides proactive mobility insights to communicate when tires need service or replacement," said Chris Helsel, senior vice president, global operations and chief technology officer, in a statement.
In six years, Goodyear said, it plans to incorporate tire intelligence in all of its products.
Other technology that Goodyear said it's incorporating include its March announcement that it was working with Voyomotive, a San Francisco car technology company, on an app that will let drivers know when their tires have low air pressure and letting drivers know about slow leaks or impending low tire pressure days before any dashboard warning light illuminates.
