OverDrive, a digital reading platform for libraries and schools, is buying Kanopy, a San Francisco-based video streaming service for public and academic libraries, for an undisclosed price.
Cleveland-based OverDrive, owned by KKR, said Kanopy is used by millions of students and library patrons and provides academic institutions and public libraries with a catalog of more than 30,000 films.
"Kanopy's impressive catalog of films, shorts, children's videos and documentaries will enhance options for all institutions to delight viewers of all ages. The Kanopy apps and streaming viewing experience are excellent services to further benefit our network of public libraries and academic partners," said Steve Potash, founder and CEO of OverDrive, in a statement.
OverDrive has a network of 65,000 libraries and schools in 84 countries, and delivers a large digital catalog of ebooks, audiobooks, magazines and other content through various apps, Potash said.
A year ago, OverDrive bought RBmedia’s library business in North America, the United Kingdom and Australia, from investment firm KKR.
According to OverDrive, Potash founded the company in 1986 and launched its content distribution service in 2000.
