Company description: TQL is the nation’s second-largest freight brokerage firm.

Who are team members being recognized? Joe Cahall, Ryne Heck, Tom Wright, Jason Eversole, Ron Ellis, Nick Herzog and Rebekah Wilks. George Rewick is the CIO.

What’s a challenge that your team helped resolve? Our less-than-truckload re-architecture project sought to replace a third-party application that did not completely meet our business needs. We set an aggressive timeline while reimagining how we functioned, moving from a traditional software development model to an agile scrum approach.

What was innovative about this approach? At TQL, personal responsibility and teamwork are cornerstones of our culture. Agile scrum teams are a better fit for us than traditional software development models because this methodology gives our developers the latitude to think and act creatively to generate solutions that can more quickly deliver business value.

Most teams don’t convert to agile scrums while tackling a major project, but we felt we couldn’t meet our timeline without the added flexibility and collaborative environment scrum teams enable.

How does your company recruit and retain tech talent? TQL’s top priorities include people and technology. Because of this, our employee value proposition is very attractive to top technical talent. Being able to work with emerging technologies alongside a team of passionate IT professionals has created a world-class environment for technologists. The engaging work, culture, perks and benefits we offer our IT Team not only helps us attract and retain talent, but continuously challenges and develops people throughout their careers.
