A locally based health tech company backed by Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and CincyTech, among others, has expanded its C-suite, a move leaders said will allow it to accelerate development and innovation efforts.

Hive Networks, a digital health startup that allows patients and families to collaborate with clinicians and researchers, has added Dr. Jon Darer as its first chief medical officer.

Darer will be based in Lewisburg, Penn. He previously served as chief clinical innovation officer at Pennsylvania-based Geisinger Health System, and most recently held the position of chief medical officer for Medicalis, a San Francisco-based clinical decision support application at Siemens Healthineers.

At Hive, Darer will be responsible for leading clinical innovation for the company’s "learning health network operating system," which allows patients, clinicians and researchers to share and create data and ideas. The goal is to improve health outcomes.

“His experience driving health care innovation will make a profound impact on the trajectory of Hive ,” John Bostick, CEO of Hive Networks, said in a release. “We are well positioned to exceed the expectations of our current and future customers.”

Darer holds a bachelor of science in engineering from Harvard College, a doctor of medicine degree from the University of Connecticut Medical School and a master of public health from Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health. He completed his internal medicine residency at Oregon Health Sciences University and his general internal medicine fellowship at Johns Hopkins Medical School.

The addition of a chief medical officer will enable Hive to accelerate the development of its software.

Hive’s platform is currently used at more than 200 clinical care sites and its learning health network model has been adopted across more than 600 clinical care sites worldwide.

Hive Networks, a former Cincy Inno “Startup to Watch,” enables patients and their families to collaborate with clinicians, staff and researchers to improve health outcomes, especially for those who live everyday with rare diseases and chronic conditions.

“The learning health networks model proves it is possible to achieve better outcomes for patients and families, get clinicians home on time and create nationwide learning communities to identify new best practices and discover new cures,” Darer said in the statement.

Hive was founded in 2019 based on more than a decade of research by Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Stakeholders include Cincinnati Children’s, CincyTech, JobsOhio, Bon Secours Mercy Health and others.

Its team moved to a fully remote model earlier this year.
