A shrinking number of Cincinnati private companies saw the kind of rapid growth that earned them a spot on the coveted Inc. 5000 list of the fastest-growing in the nation.
The Cincinnati region saw 34 companies make the annual Inc. list, down from 39 that earned placement in 2020. That itself was fewer than the 47 that made the list in 2019. The Inc. list is application-based, and companies must submit their own revenue figures.
To compile its list, Inc. looks at revenue growth over the previous four fiscal years. Privately-held, for-profit companies must have generated at least $100,000 in revenue in 2017 and then grown that to at least $2 million in revenue in 2020.
The 34 Cincinnati-area companies that made the Inc. 5000 list saw median growth of 169%, generating $6.4 billion in total revenue and adding 3,030 jobs.
Of the 34 local companies that made the Inc. list, 21 also were Business Courier Fast 55 winners, though the Courier calculates its list over the previous three years of growth, rather than Inc.'s four years.
