A Cleveland tech firm is expanding its fiber network to Cincinnati.
Everstream, which launched in 2014, announced Tuesday fiber builds in seven Midwest markets, including the Queen City. Totaling more than 1,000 route miles, the builds will support 5G rollout plans for wireless carriers, while giving businesses access to reliable, high-capacity connectivity, according to a news release.
Work is expected to begin on the Cincinnati portion of the project this year, though an exact timeline has not been released.
The expansion is part of Everstream's goal to install up to 3,000 new route miles of fiber throughout its Midwest footprint by 2021. Currently, the company has more than 15,000 route miles of fiber laid throughout its footprint.
Combined, the expansion represents an investment of $47 million, the release states.
The Cincinnati metro will receive 218 route miles of fiber, the release states. That's the third most of the seven new markets, with Louisville getting 243 and Dayton receiving 225.
"Demand for 5G services is just beginning and will require high-capacity fiber networks to support this growth," Brett Lindsey, Everstream's president and CEO, said in a statement. "By architecting and building new fiber networks in these markets, we will help support the 5G initiatives of wireless carriers and serve enterprises for years to come."
