Greater Cincinnati is home to one of the nation's best hubs for entrepreneurs, thanks to one of its largest universities.
Miami University and the Farmer School's John W. Altman Institute for Entrepreneurship was recently named the winner of the 2020 NASDAQ Center of Entrepreneurial Excellence Award, the Oxford university announced in a release.
The award, given by the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers, recognizes centers throughout the nation that have helped propel entrepreneurs forward in a variety of categories including research, outreach, community collaborations, etc. The University of Chicago, MIT, Stanford University, and Cornell University are some of the awards previous winners.
"This recognition reflects Miami's commitment to fostering a space for entrepreneurs across campus to learn, plan and grow," President Gregory Crawford said in a statement. "Our outstanding faculty and staff are nurturing a spirit of innovation and creativity and providing the inspiration, guidance and support needed for our students to begin their entrepreneurial careers on solid ground."
In a statement, John McIlwraith, co-founder and managing director of Allos Ventures, called the recognition "no surprise given the program's outstanding faculty, innovative in-classroom curriculum and numerous opportunities for experiential learning, such as the student-led Redhawk Ventures seed investment fund and the Center for Social Entrepreneurship."
Founded in 1992, the center works with more than 3,200 students annually to provide practical, hands-on experiences, the release states. Miami ranks as the region's second-largest university, with a total enrollment exceeding 22,000 students, according to Business Courier research.
