The University of Cincinnati has made Reuter's list of the World's Most Innovative Universities, coming in at No. 80 out of 100.
UC came in behind Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Israel) and ahead of the University of Freiberg (Germany). Stanford University took the ranking's top spot for the fourth year in a row.
UC wasn't the only Ohio university to make the list; the University of Ohio came in on the 32nd spot.
This global list "identifies and ranks the educational institutions doing the most to advance science, invent new technologies and power new markets and industries."
It does this by examining Clarivate Analytics data to determine the top 600 governmental and academic organizations that submitted the most articles to scholarly journals. From there, Reuter's staff examined how many patents were submitted by the 600 entities from around the same time. Those who had submitted at least 70 or more world (WIPO) patents were then further considered, with focus on the amount of the university's patent applications were accepted (and other similar factors) helped cull the list to the final 100. "Since the ranking measures innovation on an institutional level, it may overlook particularly innovative departments or programs; a university might rank low for overall innovation but still operate one of the world's best medical schools, for instance," the report states. "And it's important to remember that whether a university ranks at the top or the bottom of the list, it's still within the top 100 on the planet. All of these universities produce original research, create useful technology and stimulate the global economy."
