Both Procter & Gamble and Cincinnati Children's made America's Best Employers for Diversity 2018 rankings, a list released by Forbes on Jan. 23.

The consumer goods corporation ranked No. 27 on the list of 250; the pediatric hospital came in at No. 79.

Cincinnati wasn't the only Ohio city to make an appearance. Nationwide Mutual InsuranceOhio State University, Columbus (No. 105) and Huntington National Bank (No. 118) represented Columbus (No. 18); FirstEnergy (No. 140) listed for Akron; Progressive (No. 157) ranked for Mayfield Village; Cleveland Clinic (No. 165), Eaton (No. 183) and Case Western Reserve University (No. 216) ranked for Cleveland and Marathon Petroleum (No. 185) represented Findlay.

"One study after another has shown that companies with more diverse teams have stronger financial performance," the report states. "But without being an employee, it’s often difficult to get visibility into how seriously a company takes diversity."

That's where the ranking comes in.

In conjunction with Statista, Forbes surveyed 30,000 employees at organizations across America, asking questions about ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, age gender and diversity. It gave increased ranking weight to responses from women, individuals aged 50 and over and from underrepresented ethnic minorities, and focused on companies with 1,000 or more workers.

Additionally, Statista studied the gender ratio of organizations' leadership, its commitment to discussing diversity, and "the gap in diversity perceptions at a given organization," the report adds. "For example, if women, older employees and underrepresented minorities rated an employer poorly on diversity, but everyone else rated it highly, Statista considered that a negative indicator and adjusted the score downward."
