From October 9 through the 13th, Techstars Startup Week Cincinnati's first-ever Startup Week was live in the Queen City, and if this tweet is any indication, it was a huge success:
You read that right: more than 4,000 attendees, 4.2MM impressions, and 7,000 live streams. Whoa.
One of those streams includes the below, which chronicles members of the Cincy Inno team, National Director of Product & Strategy Will Flanagan and BostInno General Manager Kyle Gross, during a CincyTech, Cintrifuse, and StartUpCincy-sponsored lunch and learn at Union Hall. During their presentation, they introduced Cincy Inno and highlighted the dos and don'ts of pitching stories to media.
A few takeaways? Know who you're pitching to, and why the story you want covered is a good fit for the publication. Is it because it's timely news, or because its an interesting, evergreen story that has direct connection to the target audience? Either way, its paramount that the pitcher know how their story will add value to the media team's market, and craft a pitch that connects the dots for the writer receiving it.
Additionally, find ways to engage with the journalists and publication, may it be through fostering relationships on social media or submitting for awards — an easy way to generate buzz for a company.
“Every entrepreneur’s got a story to tell, they often just need a little direction on how to craft that story and which one to run with," Flanagan said. "We were thrilled to participate in Startup Week Cincinnati and can’t wait to share these stories with you.”
