Rithmio Debuts EDGE, its Stealthy, Consumer-Facing Workout Tracker [Video]

For the past three years, Chicago-based Rithmio has been developing software that integrates with existing wearable technology to more accurately measure movement. The company's innovative gesture recognition platform has been working behind the scenes, helping companies and devices gather more precise information about certain movements, such as enabling doctors to improve outpatient rehabilitation or allowing basketball players to track how many shots they took during practice.

However, over the past six months, Rithmio has been in stealth mode, working on its first consumer-facing product. This week, the company debuted EDGE, an app for Android wear devices that helps athletes and weightlifters track their workouts and measure progress. Rithmio EDGE is designed for that frequent gym-goer who carries around a notebook and a pencil to record their sets; in short, EDGE is digitizing that notebook.

With EDGE, the connected device tracks the entirety of an individual's workout, recording periods of activity and inactivity, as well their form. The app learns how the user executes a specific exercise, like a bicep curl, and then automatically tracks that exercise moving forward, populating their workout log for them, curl by curl and set by set.

Rithmio, which was founded by an alumnus and an associate professor of the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, will be rolling out EDGE to Android Wear devices first, followed by the Apple Watch. EDGE will be available for the public on Google Play and iTunes this summer and people can join the product's beta community already now here.
