A Chicago Startup Is Calling on Designers to Re-create the Chess Set

A Chicago store wants to bring some creativity to the standard chess set through a design competition to re-create the centuries-old game.

Marbles: The Brain Store has launched the Make Your Move 2015 Chess Set Visual Design Competition that aims to give the 1,500-year-old chess set a modern makeover.

Marbles is looking to re-design the six chess pieces--Pawn, Castle, Knight, Bishop, Queen and King--with the winner receiving $2,000 and their name on the chess set. The game will be produced by Marbles and sold in Marbles' stores.

"The Marbles Team continuously strives to create games, toys and puzzles that keep minds more active," said Lindsay Gaskins, Marbles: The Brain Store Founder and CEO. "The Marbles Team is excited to offer new products that keep minds more active as more and more people now see puzzles and games as a key component to overall health."

Marbles launched in Chicago in 2008 and has since expanded to 28 locations across the country. Gaskins created the store to help improve people's focus and attention, and enhance creativity. Marbles sells brain games, puzzles, gadgets and other creative toys for people of all ages.

The company is working closely with Columbia College to encourage submissions from its design students. Entries are due March 13, and you can apply here.
