This Magnetic Privacy Shield Keeps Hackers From Spying on You Through Your Webcam

Nope
The Nope is a magnetic privacy shield for built-in computer cameras.

Everyone is on high alert about having their information stolen from the cloud, but it's important to remember that hackers can spy on you directly by accessing your commuter's built-in webcam.

In May 97 people were arrested after a global investigation revealed hackers were using spying software called Blackshades Remote Access Tool to access webcams. Hackers get in once the user clicks on a link, usually through social media, that activates the software.

But Chicagoan Anil Rami has developed an extremely simple device to protect from potential webcam hackers, and in just one day it's already more than tripled its Kickstarter goal.

Rami launched a crowdfunding campaign for the Nope, a magnetic privacy shield for iMacs, Macbooks, laptops and desktops. It's a small, discreet magnet that covers up your built-in computer camera. Rami developed the device after volunteering with children and seeing the need for improved privacy.

"We started this project because we volunteer with students who use digital camera enabled devices," the Kickstarter campaign reads. "The shocking truth is that just about anyone can hack into your  computer and turn on the camera without you even knowing it.  The only way to guarantee your privacy is to cover the camera when you are not using it.  We believe that it is your space, so you should be the one to decide when your camera is being used."

In less than a day, the Nope has raised more than $1,500 with 150+ backers, well above the $500 it set out to raise. You can receive two Nopes with a $5 pledge.

Rami is no stranger to successful Kickstarters. Just last month he raised nearly $100,000 to produce a mounting system that props up mobile devices virtually anywhere.

It's a shame that the Nope even needs to exist in the first place. But if you have kids who are really active on the computer, of if you're just looking for an extra layer of privacy, the Nope is much nicer looking than a piece of tape.
