Later this year Chicago liquor stores will begin carrying the Vaportini, a device that lets you inhale alcohol rather than drink it, according to a report in Crain's.
The Vaportini was developed in 2009 by Chicagoan Julie Palmer, and she began selling the device online in 2012. She's now worked out a deal with Chicago bar supplier Collins Brothers to get the Vaportini on liquor store shelves by the end of the year, according to Crain's.
Here's how it works: You take a regular pint glass and place a small lit candle in the bottom. You then place the provided metal ring and sphere globe on the top of the glass. Use a funnel to poor 1-1.5 ounces of alcohol into the globe and let it sit and heat for 4-5 minutes. Vapor will begin to appear, at which point you place a small straw into a hole in the globe, without touching the liquid, and deeply inhale.
There are plenty of benefits to inhaling booze, according to Vaportini. There are no calories, no carbs, you get buzzed faster, and the effects don't last as long (which may, or may not, be a benefit). There's even infusion recipes to create a sort of "mixed drink" in the Vaportini. And if you don't want to wait for them to hit the liquor store shelves, you can buy kits online, which range from $35 to $62.50.
Inhaling alcohol with a Vaportini will be detected by a blood alcohol test ands it is legal in all states.
And if you're a fan of the FXX show The League, you might remember the Vaportini making an appearance with Taco and Snoop Dogg.
