A new grocery store concept led by the founder of Mariano’s and backed by big names is opening its second location in Chicago, with plans to add more than a dozen others in the coming years.

Dom’s Kitchen & Market, an upscale grocery store concept from Dom Mariano, the founder of Mariano's, is opening a new location at 1225 North Wells St. in Old Town. The new space is slated to open in the fall.

It joins Dom's Kitchen & Market's first location in Lincoln Park that opened last year. The 17,800-square-foot store sells grocery items, along with pre-made meals and made-to-order meals. It also features a bar called “The Brew,” which offers coffee, tea, wine, cocktails and beer, and a bakery that sells fresh bread and sandwiches.

It also lets customers order online for in-store or curbside pickup, as well as delivery from third-party apps like Grubhub.

The Old Town location is the latest in what aims to be 15 stores by 2025, the company said.

Dom's Kitchen & Market has raised $25 million in funding from Cleveland Avenue, the VC firm led by former McDonald's CEO Don Thompson; Valor Siren Ventures, a food-focused fund from Chicago's Valor Equity Partners that includes a $100 million commitment from Starbucks; and Wasson Enterprises, the family office of former Walgreens CEO Greg Wasson.

Other executives behind the project include Don Fitzgerald, a former senior executive at Dominick’s and Mariano's, and Jay Owen, the managing partner of Dom Capital Group and the great-grandson of Dominick’s founder Dominick DiMatteo.
