The largest retail and supermarket chain in Switzerland is using technology from Chicago's LanzaTech to create bottles for juices, household cleaners and mouth wash out of CO2.

Migros announced Tuesday that it's working with LanzaTech to create the world's first bottle with polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is made from recycled carbon.

PET is a polyester that's molded into plastic bottles and containers for packaging, and Migros said it plans to make bottles for smoothies, juices, household cleaners, mouth wash and liquid soap using LanzaTech's technology that converts carbon waste into everyday products.

LanzaTech first began working with Migros in 2020 through its subsidiary Mibelle Group, which launched a range of liquid cleaning products containing LanzaTech CarbonSmart Ethanol. LanzaTech's CarbonSmart Ethanol is produced from recycled carbon emissions from the production of steel.

"Today you can walk into a store and purchase products made from carbon emissions that are packaged in bottles made from those same emissions," LanzaTech CEO Jennifer Holmgren said in a statement.

Founded in 2005, LanzaTech has landed several well-known companies to its roster of clients that are looking to go green.

In March, beauty conglomerate Coty announced it was working with LanzaTech to create sustainable fragrances, and Unliever announced in April that it partnered with the company to produce a new laundry detergent pod. It's also working with lululemon to create the first fabric using recycled carbon emissions.

LanzaTech has raised more than $400 million in outside funding to date from backers like Khosla Ventures, Novo Holdings and the Department of Energy.

The company also creates renewable fuel for airplanes through its subsidiary, LanzaJet, which launched last year with $50 million in funding. It helped Virgin Atlantic fly across the pacific on sustainable aviation fuel made from carbon emissions.
