Chicago investors are behind a new startup led by former TikTok and Snap alums that helps anyone create music.
Mayk.it, based in L.A., announced Tuesday that it raised $4 million in seed funding from investors such as Chicago Ventures, Cameo CEO Steven Galanis, Greycroft, Slow Ventures, Firstminute Capital and recording artist T-Pain.
The startup is led by co-founders Stefan Heinrich Henriquez, a former TikTok execute who also served as the CMO of Cameo, and Akiva Bamberger, a former software engineer at Snap. Mayk.it's app acts as a personal recording studio for its users, offering professional-quality voice filters and produced beats. It also has a social media element, giving users in-app distribution by sharing songs with the Mayk.it community.
The idea is to help lower the barrier to creating music with an easy-to-use platform that creates streaming-quality sound, the company says. The app is currently available by invite only.
Henriquez said in a statement that the hope is Mayk.it "inspires more people to connect via personalized songs."
Chicago startup Songfinch is also in the personalized music business, and it too counts a well-known artist among its investors. Songfinch, a platform that lets you buy personalized songs from musicians, secured an investment from The Weeknd earlier this year.
