Boston-based e-commerce furniture company Wayfair plans to open a new fulfillment center in Chicagoland that will bring hundreds of new jobs to the area.

Wayfair announced Friday that it will open a 1.2 million-square-foot fulfillment center in Romeoville, a southwest suburb just north of Joliet. The facility will house 250 full-time jobs, but could eventually employ up to 500, the company said. Construction on the warehouse, which will sit on a 60-acre plot of land along Renwick Road, will begin this spring. Wayfair expects the fulfillment center to open in mid-2022.

Wayfair said in January it now provides a minimum wage of $15 per hour for all of its U.S. employees, along with a benefits package that includes equity, 401K matching and tuition reimbursement.

The company also operates warehouse locations in Carol Stream and South Elgin.

“Once again, Illinois is a top choice for companies seeking to expand and innovate – thanks to our skilled talent, proximity to transportation, and resources found only here in our state," Dan Hynes, deputy governor of Illinois, said in a statement.

Wayfair, founded in Boston in 2002, went public in 2014. It did $13 billion in revenue last year.
