Go inside Walgreens' new technology hub at the Old Main Post Office

After signing a lease in 2018, Walgreens’ new office at the Old Main Post Office has been fully renovated.

The 200,000-square-foot office at 433 W. Van Buren St. serves as the technology hub for Walgreens and can house about 1,800 employees. It is unclear if employees have already moved into the office and if they are currently working there now during the pandemic. Walgreens did not respond to a request for comment as of press time.

According to a press release, Walgreens said the office will house digital and IT employees, combining Walgreens’ retail pharmacy technology teams with its mobile and e-commerce teams.

Walgreens currently employs nearly 4,200 people in Chicago. The company also has offices in suburban Deerfield, where it has been since 1975.

Canada-based Stantec, along with Walgreens’ in-house development group, handled the architecture, engineering and interior design of the office.

Up until the last few years, the 2.5 million-square-foot Old Main Post Office had been sitting vacant since the late 1990s. But after New York-based 601W Cos. acquired the building a few years ago to redevelop it into an office building, companies have begun to sign leases.

Uber has leased 450,000 square feet in the Old Main Post Office but paused construction last year amid Covid-19. Other companies that have agreed to move into the building include PepsiCo and CBOE Global Markets.

Back in 2017, the building was floated as a possible location for Amazon's HQ2 when the tech giant was looking at cities for its second North American Headquarters.
