Amazon.com Inc. said it's going to hire 1,500 people to work at its four new Amazon Fresh grocery stores that it's opening in the Chicago area.
The Seattle retailing giant (Nasdaq: AMZN) said that it will open new Amazon Fresh locations in Naperville, Bloomingdale, Oak Lawn and Schaumburg. Amazon did not reveal opening dates.
Amazon introduced its first Amazon Fresh grocery store in Woodland Hills, California in August. It describes the concept as " designed from the ground up to offer a seamless grocery shopping experience, whether customers are shopping in-store or online." Store features include Amazon Dash cart that allows shoppers to leave without using a checkout line.
City officials were pleased with Amazon's announcement.
Last month, Amazon said it is bringing 5,500 jobs to Chicagoland to work in new fulfillment, operations and logistics roles.
Amazon said that since 2010, it has invested more than $8 billion in Illinois, including infrastructure (28 Whole Foods Market locations and seven Amazon Go store locations) and compensation for its more than 23,000 employees.
