Amazon is bringing 5,500 jobs to Chicagoland as part of a larger plan to expand throughout North America, the company said on Monday.

The new fulfillment, operations and logistics roles coming to Chicago are just a handful of the 100,000 full- and part-time roles the Seattle-based tech giant is adding across the U.S. and Canada. The new jobs comes as Amazon aims to meet demand as more consumers shop from home amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The tech company is also planning to open 100 new operations buildings this month across the U.S. and Canada. So far in 2020, Amazon said it has already opened more than 75 new fulfillment, sortation centers, regional air hubs and delivery stations.

Amazon is currently building two warehouses in Matesson and Markham, Illinois, that are slated to employ 2,000 people.

Right now, Amazon employs more than 23,000 full and part-time people in Illinois, the company said. Illinois has nine fulfillment and sortation centers, 28 Whole Foods Markets, seven Amazon Go store locations and one Amazon Books store. Amazon also has a corporate office downtown that expanded last year.

Monday’s job news is just the latest employment announcement from Amazon. The company said last week that it is adding 33,000 corporate and technology jobs, and hosting a virtual job fair to find candidates on Sept. 16. The average compensation package for these roles is about $150,000.
